Rocket League announces big changes, including a whopping World Championship prize pool
Start your engines for a chance to win part of a US$4.5 million pot.
Rocket League has clearly decided that when the world changes in a profound way, sometimes you have to change with the world.
With COVID-19 continuing to make the idea of live events of any kind a health risk not worth taking, there’s been a major overhaul to Rocket League action.
Say goodbye to the two-seasons-per-year format. Instead, as part of RLCS X, teams will compete on an open event-based circuit to secure a place in World Championship action. That translates into fall, winter, and spring splits for three regional events in both Europe and North America.
An open qualifier will determine which teams get to start their engines and take to the pitch to win the ultimate US$1 million championship prize. There will also be $US250,000 up for grabs at each major, and US$100,000 for regional events.
In total there will be US$4.5 million in prize money handed out. Sixteen teams will compete for the final World Championship.
In a press release, Rocket League game developer Psyonix said: “We believe this format strikes a healthy balance between open competition and rewarding consistent, high-level performance. It also gives us the flexibility to continue to award points towards World Championship qualification if live international events are not possible during the season due to world wide health concerns.”
RLCS X’s fall split gets under way with a European event on August 1. Those convinced they’ve got the right stuff to compete can sign up here.
COVID-19 isn’t the sole reason for the change in direction. Psyonix has been working on major updates to Rocket League, and has put on the brakes for Season 14 as it tweaks things like ranks for Grand Champion players. The updates are scheduled to be rolled out sometime this summer.
Rocket League players, meanwhile, can look forward to an upcoming fifth-anniversary celebration on July 13, where award balloons can be cashed in for golden eggs and special cosmetics.
