The world of esports gets a lot of attention for the size of its biggest prize pools. And for good reason—there is some serious money out there. For example, consider that the pool for Dota 2’s the International currently sits at an astounding—and record-setting—US$40,018,195.

In general, though, your only shot at getting a piece of that kind of coin is to get signed by a top-tier esports team. If you’re not a professional, you can forget about it.

On the other hand, even if you’re not a pro, you still have a chance to be named the Best Gamer on Earth. That’s the title Ultimate Gamer will bestow upon the winner of its Worldwide Open. That competition kicks off on March 1, and the best part is that it’s free to enter.

Actually, scratch that. The best thing about the Ultimate Gamer Worldwide Open is its US$1 million prize purse.

A final in the fall

The tournament will culminate in a final event in the fall, during which 200 of the best players from the Ultimate Gamer Worldwide Open will compete in at least six different games across five genres. As for what those games will be, the press release from Ultimate Gamer only reveals that they could include League of Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, Call of Duty Warzone, Madden 21, Fortnite, NBA 2K21, Valorant, and Tekken.

“Each player’s ranking in each game will be added together and then divided by the total number of games to calculate the final score,” the press release reads. “All two hundred players will walk away with a portion of the prize pool, with the winner taking home $300,000 and the runner-up winning $150,000.”

“At Ultimate Gamer, it’s our mission to give everyday gamers who are normally not supported a place to test their skills in a variety of titles, play against gamers from all over the world, and celebrate gaming on the largest scale possible,” said Ultimate Gamer CEO Steve Suarez. “I’m proud to be building one of the world’s largest and most inclusive gaming communities, completely agnostic of whether you play on PC, console, or mobile, or whether you like sports, MOBA, Fighting, or FPS games. If you want to find like-minded people, or just want to play for the love of gaming, Ultimate Gamer is where you need to be.”

I have done a lot of different things over the course of my life and professional career. I have interviewed Oscar and Grammy winners and written cover stories for glossy newsstand magazines. I have played guitar in a rock band on national TV and run an independent music label for which I wrote all of the PR and marketing materials. In my spare time, I sweated out a novel about a world where raccoons are kings and dragons are real.
