Mercedes and Riot team up for a League of Legends Worlds gem

Long after the team photo has been taken, the victory speeches have been delivered, and the parade has taken place, there’s a way to spot a champion. All you have to do is look for an audacious ring. When you win the whole shooting match in Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, National Football League, or National Hockey League, you get not only the glory, but a championship ring to remember things by. And now Riot Games and Mercedes Benz are looking to start a new tradition for victors in the world of League of Legends.

The game developer and luxury automobile maker have announced a partnership that will see them honour the winner of the upcoming League of Legends World Championship. Ultimate victors will not, unfortunately, be given the keys to a new car or receive digital copies of every game that Riot has ever produced. They will, however, get a pretty swank looking championship ring, with Mercedes and Riot footing the bill. In addition to sporting the Summoner’s Cup colours, the ring will be custom fitted and feature the name of each player.

As one might expect from a project involving Mercedes, no one’s cheaping out here. Which explains why the two companies are describing their collabo as a symbol of “the highest level of achievement and prestige in esports”.

In announcing the initiative, Riot Games Global Head of LoL Esports Naz Aletaha said, “Championship rings are a storied tradition in sports, synonymous with the highest achievements and unmatched excellence. Since the start of our partnership in 2020, Mercedes-Benz has helped elevate and celebrate the best-of-the-best in LoL Esports, and we are thrilled to bring together our shared love for design and innovation to make a resounding mark on the crowning achievement of our sport.”

Featuring a precision-cut sapphire and made of 18-karat white gold, each ring will be adorned with the famous Mercedes Benz logo. The LoL World Championships logo, meanwhile, will have a diamond placed in it.

“The Ring was a challenge that we gladly accepted,” said Mercedes-Benz designer Steffen Köhl. “In the end, we succeeded in bringing together the identities and design languages of both partners in this unique Ring design. We are looking forward to the moment when the winners are presented with the ring at the Trophy Ceremony. There is a real piece of Mercedes DNA in it.”

To get one’s hands on a ring, or, more accurately, to get a ring placed on one’s hands, all you have to do is vanquish the competition to take home top spot.

As noted above, this isn’t the first time that Riot and Mercedes have partnered up. Last year the two forged a deal where the iconic automaker signed on as the trophy ceremony sponsor for not only the World Championship but also the All-Star Event and Mid-Season Invitational. In the world of League of Legends no one is hooking up with the maker of Lada.

This year’s finals, and the ring presentation, will take place in Reykjavik, Iceland.
