Black Ops Cold War Zombies announces a Christmas-like free week

Everyone loves Christmas—until January. That’s when reality sets in, usually about two seconds after the credit card statement arrives. Springing for a $1,021 HTC Vive VR headset for your niece and nephew seemed like a great idea in December. Now you’re sitting regretting not just picking up a Mattel Intellivision on Craigslist instead. And that makes today’s Black Ops Cold War Zombies Free Access week very good news indeed.

For the first time ever in the long and gloriously violent history of Call of Duty, the Treyarch zombies mode will be made available free of charge. From January 14 to 21 you will pay nothing to play during what’s being dubbed Zombies Free Access Week by game developer Activision.

The free period will be made available to all players regardless of the platform they are loyal to.

Games modes will include:

  • Die Maschine, where a huge particle collider in an abandoned WWII-era Polish lab has unleashed the undead. Here’s what Activision has to say about the mode: “With its starting area paying homage to the original World at War Zombies map that started it all, “Die Maschine” is a round-based Zombies experience where up to four players can drop in and attempt to survive the horrors that lie in wait. Work together by using dozens of weapons, lethal and tactical equipment, powerful Scorestreaks, and special Field Upgrades – such as an Energy Mine or an instant-heal through the Healing Aura – that charge up by killing zombies.”
  • Cranked. Think Die Maschine only more stressful, if that’s possible. Teams are airlifted in with a loadout they’ve chosen, with the action starting once the first zombie arrives. Activision notes: “Your Operator will explode if they fail to kill another zombie before the timer hits zero, and the timer gets shorter and shorter as the game progresses! Keep an eye out for the Cranked Timer Power-up, which temporarily freezes the timer for all players. Watch the clock – and your six – to survive this fast-paced new Zombies game mode… and be sure to put the locational Ping system to use when playing with your squad.”
  • Onslaught. To participate you’ll need to either beg, borrow, steal, or preferably buy a PlayStation. The two-players zombies experience unfolds on the Black Ops Cold War Multiplayer maps. Here’s Activisions words: “In this mode, your duo will use whatever is in your loadouts to fight against hyper-aggressive waves of undead forces. Unlike in traditional round-based Zombies, a Dark Aether Orb will confine you to a specific space on the map until it is charged by the souls of the undead. As the safe area shifts, expect increasingly difficult surges of enemies, including incredibly powerful Elites, to test your duo’s survival skills.”
